GEN – 1487.00. At the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Consultation Forum meeting of 9 June 2023, the European Commission presented the Critical Raw Materials (CRM) Act and its implications for products regulated under Ecodesign.
Information requirements for HVAC products
A summary of the relevant requirements is provided in GEN – 1484. In short, products that contain permanent magnets must bear a label with a data carrier that specifies the type of magnets, where they are located in the product, and how to remove them. This requirement notably applies to electric motors and to products that integrate an electric motor.
DG GROW clarified that the requirement is cascading. In case of an electric motor integrated into a product, both the motor and the final product must bear a label. It is sufficient for the label on the final product to refer to the electric motor within, and then the electric motor should have its own label with information about the permanent magnets.
This should enable a recycler to notice, locate and remove the electric motor from the final product, and then in turn notice, locate and remove the permanent magnets from the electric motor.
