Eurovent launches an air curtain calculator
Brussels, 03 September 2026. Eurovent has launched a new Air Curtain Calculator, a practical online tool designed to help legislators, shop owners, and building professionals assess the effectiveness of air curtains and better understand their potential impact on energy use and indoor comfort.
The new calculator is available free of charge at www.eurovent.eu/air-curtain-calculator/
Air curtains are designed to create an air barrier across an open doorway, helping to limit the exchange of air between different environments. When correctly selected and applied, they can contribute to reducing unwanted heat transfer, maintaining indoor conditions and improving the energy performance of buildings. Eurovent has been actively working to support the correct selection and application of air curtains through its Product Group Air Curtains and Fan Heaters (PG-CUR), including technical recommendations and guidance on classification and positioning.
The new Air Curtain Calculator provides users with a straightforward way to estimate the air curtain energy savings by entering relevant information about the opening and the surrounding conditions. Selecting the right air curtain is important. An incorrectly selected or installed unit may not provide the expected level of protection against air exchange and heat transfer. The new calculator offers several benefits to industry professionals:
- Simplifies technical assessment by bringing relevant calculations together in an accessible online tool.
- Supports correct selection and application of air curtains at the design stage.
- Helps users understand the factors affecting effectiveness, including the characteristics of the opening and surrounding conditions.
- Supports energy-efficiency considerations by helping assess how an air curtain can contribute to limiting unwanted heat transfer.
- Saves time by providing a practical calculation tool that can be accessed online without specialised software.
- Improves communication between stakeholders, providing a common basis for discussions between manufacturers, designers, installers, consultants and building owners.
Upon launching the calculator, the Eurovent Product Group ‘Air Curtains’ Secretary, Massimiliano Ferrario, alluded that: “The new Air Curtain Calculator is a practical tool that puts technical knowledge into the hands of the professionals who need it, but also to the non-experts, guiding them through a first assessment of the energy-saving potential of an air curtain unit. By making the assessment of air curtain effectiveness more accessible, we aim to support better-informed decisions and encourage the correct application of this energy-saving technology.”
Michael Hims, Chairperson of the Eurovent Product Group ‘Air Curtains’, added that: “This tool has been created from testing carried out by TNO for Eurovent member Binnenklimaat, who have kindly shared their results with us. By adding climate data from Copernicus, we have been able to extend the tool’s geographical reach to cover all European countries.
The tool has been designed to give a very quick estimate as to the savings that can be realised by just having an air curtain unit installed, whilst having an advanced mode that lets the user understand the real impact one air curtain can have versus another. By stating the savings in both financial terms and carbon equivalents, it’s once again a strong reminder of the benefits air curtains can have on the indoor climate and wider environment.”
The calculator builds on Eurovent’s broader work to improve the understanding and application of air curtain technology across Europe. The Eurovent Product Group Air Curtains and Fan Heaters covers air curtain units for commercial, industrial and cold-storage applications and has developed recommendations addressing topics including technical performance and the classification and correct positioning of air curtain units.
