In this episode of the ‘Women of Eurovent’, Taina Horgan tells us her memorable experience in her career and also provides some measures that companies can take to promote more women in the HVACR sector.

What made you decide to pursue a career in HVACR?

It is something that just happened. I was fortunate enough to start in a growing business with leaders that promoted talent. I have had the opportunity to learn and evolve, which has been an exciting journey, and still is.

What do you think we can do to support and encourage more women to join our industry?

Now is a great time for women to enter the HVAC trade. The industry is growing, along with the need for more professionals in all areas. We need to promote and inspire girls to enter the business and offer our network and support. We need to remember that our industry needs to appeal to women as well as men. Job seekers are not just looking for a job that pays the bills these days. They want to work for businesses that are accommodating and cultivate a positive work culture, for both men and women.

How do you deal with stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance?

It is not always easy, but I consciously try to manage and plan my time to meet both professional and personal commitments. I think it is important to find something outside of work that you love doing. I enjoy the outdoors and aim to go out every day, having a dog helps. At work, I find it important to make priorities, so that you don’t try to solve all your tasks at once.

How do you inspire others?

I have been active in the HVAC business for 20+ years in various leadership roles. I would like to think I am an inspiration and role model for women in the industry, showing that HVAC is an industry for us and that there are possibilities for us to make a career. I am also active in various networks and in different support programs.

What has been your most memorable experience in the HVACR industry?

It is hard to say. There are so many experiences. But if I would pick one; it would be my year in Portugal for Systemair. It was learning by doing and I had the opportunity to work with some fantastic colleagues that taught me a lot. I am very proud of what we achieved and what they have continued to build after I returned home.

Do you ever feel like you are being underestimated or undervalued? How do you deal with it?

I believe all of us have at some point felt that they have been underestimated or undervalued. I think it is important to reflect, talk to someone whom you trust and from that, decide on what your approach will be.

Have you ever faced challenges in the HVACR industry because of your gender?

Yes, however I can see that the industry is making progress, even if there is still considerable room for improvement. I believe it is important for companies to prioritise equal pay, encourage skill development for women in the workforce and provide flexible work arrangements during and after pregnancy. To break the glass ceiling, we need to increase our efforts to promote women into various leadership positions. This does not only address pay disparity, but also fosters a more inclusive work culture.

What is your personal definition of success?

Success for me is when you manage to balance all aspects of life, including work, family, relationships, leisure, and personal development. A lot of the time it is easier said than done but is still something to aspire for.

How do you continue to learn and expand your knowledge?

Stay curious. To learn and expand your knowledge is a long-life journey. I read, listen to podcasts, join in workshops, take courses, join events, and discuss and explore new ideas with friends and colleagues in and outside our industry.

What advice would you give to women thinking of joining the HVACR industry?

Connect with individuals who have experience from the industry. Seek mentorship and guidance from established professionals that provide insights, advice, and support you. Go to events or visit an exhibition to learn more about the industry. You can also contact the local association to find out more.

How do you motivate others to embrace change?

Before introducing a new idea or upcoming change, I think it is important to have a specific goal in mind and to explain the reasoning behind it. Leave room for ideas and improvements, let everyone’s ideas be heard and support an open environment allowing discussions and diverse opinions. When colleagues feel motivated to introduce their own change initiatives, I feel confident that it strengthens the company culture and encourages innovation and change.
