State of play

The 2016 Gas Appliances Regulation (GAR), which replaced the 2009 Gas Appliances Directive, has become fully applicable as of 21 April 2018. It notably covers appliances burning gaseous fuels used for heating, hot water production, and refrigeration, including also regulating, controlling and safety devices and sub-assemblies thereof. The essential requirements that must be complied with are stipulated in Annex I and include general, safety, information, energy use, material, gas leakage, combustion and ignition requirements, which must be verified through third party conformity assessment.

Draft standardisation mandate Gas Appliances Regulation open for feedback

Taking into account the changes introduced by the GAR (EU 2016/426), the Commission considers it necessary to request the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) to review existing harmonised standards and to adopt necessary amendments or revisions to these standards or to elaborate new harmonised standards.
