Brussels, 26 August 2025. Eurovent has published a new recommendation on ventilation systems in new and renovated residential buildings in support of the recast EPBD goals. It provides guidance on the application of technologies that ensure good IAQ.
This first edition Recommendation on ventilation systems in new and renovated residential buildings responds directly to the objectives of the recast Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD 2024/1275), advocating for harmonised IAQ and ventilation requirements across all EU Member States. It highlights the role of mechanical ventilation not only in new construction but also in major renovations, stressing that improved airtightness without proper ventilation can severely compromise occupant health and well-being.
The Vice-Chairperson of Eurovent Product Group Residential Ventilation Systems (PG-RVS), Arie Veldhuijzen, mentioned: “It is important that the recast EPBD contains provisions for IAQ and ventilation and links this to health. In so doing, it is essential to clarify how this can be applied in practice. With this recommendation, we demonstrate how ventilation systems work and which ventilation solution is suitable for which situation. This is important for many people, not only for those involved in the implementation of the recast EPBD, but for anyone involved in new construction or renovation.”
This Recommendation, prepared in a joint effort by participants of the Product Group Residential Ventilation Systems (PG-RVS), provides detailed descriptions of residential ventilation system types, their energy savings potential compared to natural ventilation, and practical guidance for both new and retrofit applications across different climates.
