Basic information

State of play

The 2014 Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive limits electromagnetic emissions from equipment in order to ensure that, when used as intended, such equipment does not disturb radio and telecommunication, as well as other equipment. The directive also governs the immunity of such equipment to interference and seeks to ensure that this equipment is not disturbed by radio emissions, when used as intended. In 2020-2021, an evaluation study and associated public consultation was carried out on behalf of the European Commission, the final conclusions of which were published in September 2021.

Legislation

This section covers European legislation that addresses electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). This covers not only the legal text of the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive but also studies, guidelines, policies on standardisation, and more. The database contains the most recent publications but also allows you to go back in time. The documents establish essential requirements to ensure that electrical and electronic equipment does not emit or is not affected by electromagnetic disturbances, safeguarding the proper functioning of devices within the internal market. They define obligations for manufacturers, importers, and distributors, including conformity assessment procedures and CE marking. These rules aim to guarantee a harmonised approach to EMC, promoting the free movement of compliant equipment while ensuring a high level of protection against electromagnetic interference.
